Phylogenic

“What ya reading Hoffman?” said Fenmore.

“T.S. Elliot. My Grandfather gave it to me. Listen to this,” said Hoffman, “‘This is the way the world ends. Not with a bang but a whimper.’”

“Apparently your boy Elliot never heard of one of these.” said Fenmore. He armed the Nova Bomb nestled in the launch hold.

A green light blinked on. “We’ve got clearance for the shot.” said Hoffman, “Guess the negotiations failed.”

Fenmore jostled the launch lever, but it was stuck. “Well, I hope they enjoy signing a treaty with this.” he said, leaning back and kicking the handle into place.

Puzzle

“You need to sleep.” said Lowe “You’re exhausted, and that means you’re gonna make mistakes.”

Black and white photos covered everything; they lined the walls and covered Clayton’s desk. He had spent the last fourteen hours reading through every eye witness account and a stack of coroner’s reports at least two feet high.

“At least eat something?” said Lowe.

Clayton rubbed his eyes. They burned red and his head was pounding. “I need more time.” he said, “You know that if we don’t figure this out soon, this thing is going to get away again. Then where does that leave us?”

Regatta

Olli applied slight pressure and the needle tore through his skin, nestling in a large vein. The plunger slid smoothly emptying 10ccs of amber Tetranoxinol-7 into his blood.

He spit the syringe cap over his shoulder and pulled down his blast goggles. “How we lookin’ Bopper?” he said.

“Ten seconds ’til the flag.”

T-7 took twenty-five seconds to reach the brain, sending his senses into overdrive, and upping his reaction time by four hundred percent.

“Hows the new engine look?” said Olli.

“Just wait ’til you see how she handles around the Celsian black hole. You’ll love it.”

Ophiuchus

“Sadly, down here everything moves so fast, sometimes I lose sight of myself.” said Brodie.

Ophiuchus kneeled. “Let me show you something.” he said.

Ophiuchus offered Brodie his hand. Brodie stepped up and steadied himself on Ophiuchus’ gigantic thumb as he felt the ground fall away beneath him.

“Hows this for a change of perspective?” said Ophiuchus.

Brodie could almost see the whole world in a single glance. Every piece fit together perfectly. Each part complimenting the next. The sun began to slip away behind the arc of the Earth as the horizon burst into flames, and Brodie was left speechless.

Lindsey

As Erik placed his hand on Lindsey’s shoulder, she recoiled slightly to his touch. “Its just me honey,” he said, “Dr. Reinhold is here to see you sweetheart.”

Lindsey curled tighter into a ball, lying on her side facing the wall. “How long has she been like this?” said the Doctor. Reinhold stood behind Erik, next to the bed.

“Four, maybe five days. But this isn’t the problem.” said Erik, “This I can handle. What happens at night is why I called you. As soon as the sun goes down she starts spitting like a cat and scratching at the walls.”

Caoimhín

“I once met a man on the road to Mount Ithorne. He sat off to the side, in the mud, and held out his hand like a beggar, but instead beckoned me.” said Caoimhín. He gently placed his shield on the table. “When I came near, the sight of him chilled me, if only because he was familiar.”

“His rags were tattered and singed from fire and covered thick with blood. When he opened his mouth to speak, I heard the cries of countless souls writhing in agony, deep within.”

“What did he say?” said Marcus.

“That he was my father.”

Cards

The front door slammed and a gust of wind danced through the living room with a sneer. Andrew’s house of cards collapsed in a flutter.

“You will not believe the day I had at work!” said Kendra, “How can people be so inept!?” She slumped down on the couch next to Andrew. His face was red with frustration, but he knew it was an accident.

“Who pissed in your Cheerios?” she said. Kendra noticed the cards scattered across the table. “Oh, I’m sorry. I did it again, didn’t I?”

“When you’re grumpy, you really sure know how to spread it around.”

Tobin

Tobin had been drawn to this place by a low, painfully beautiful song. It was her. She sang now to him. He couldn’t move; wouldn’t move for anything in the world.

The wraith wrapped its ghostly body around the tree. Its eyes looking back, always locked on him, never wavering.

Motion to his left caught his eye. There were more. Quickly he realized what he failed to before. The trees surrounding the clearing were filled with them.

He looked back at his siren. She was more elegant than the rest, bigger too. Something in her face changed, and then, they swarmed.

Bailey

“You saved me once,” said Zach “Did you know that?”

“What do you mean?” replied Bailey.

“When I was at my lowest point, I had lost faith in everything; my family, the system, humanity… God.” Zach moved closer. “You helped me find it again. In myself.”

“I don’t know what you’re talking about, and neither do you.” said Bailey, stepping closer to the ledge. Far below, the black water seemed to beckon him with and undulating gesture.

“You’re not thinking straight man. Please come down.” said Zach.

“You don’t understand Zach. None of this is real. I’m hitting the reset button.”

Anthony

Anthony swung his feet over the edge of the bed and sat up. Clothes were strewn across the floor. “This was a mistake” he said, “I should go.” He began to gather his things.

“I thought this was what you wanted.” said Olivia.

“Its what you wanted. I don’t know if I’m ready for this.”

I don’t understand. What is the matter?

Her bra was draped across the lampshade. The light shone through the lace and covered the wall in flowers and gently warmed Olivia’s face. She was beautiful.

Anthony slowly slid his pants on. “The problem is, I love you”
